A legacy of support for current postgraduates:
The Donald Bates' Bequest Fund

Twenty awards ranging from £100 to £500 were recently made to current Warwick postgraduate students, thanks to The Donald Bates' Bequest Fund. This Fund was established in 2005 as a result of a bequest made to the University by the late Don Bates (MA Industrial & Business Studies 1967-69) and awards are made on an annual basis.

As a mature student taking a Masters at Warwick, Don found it necessary to seek financial assistance from the University's Student Hardship Fund and this support allowed him to successfully complete his studies. Don chose to demonstrate his gratitude for the support he received by making provision for the Hardship Fund in his will. He passed away in 2004.

Don believed very strongly in learning and scholarship and hence his legacy was used to help postgraduates who are suffering financial difficulties towards the end of their studies after supporting themselves for some time.

Many of the recipients were keen to pass on their thanks for their awards – here are just two of the messages we received:

I am an international PHD student with two children. As a student and parent, there are many unanticipated costs that arise during your study that can cause grief and interrupt your progress. I was pleased that I received a Donald Bates Bursary which helped me resolve a financial emergency thus enabling me to continue my studies without disruption.
Freddy James (Current PhD student)

I would like say 'Thank You' for the bursary award, it will help us to make the most of this experience (postgraduate study) and remain within positive terms. For me, the most important thing here is not the award itself, but it is the help that you receive from somebody that believes in you even if they don't know you. Some people call it altruism, I prefer to call it 'blessing'. Thank you very much!
Diego Hernandez (Current MBA student)

Action! Calling all budding film-makers…

This year will see the fourth Warwick Shootout film-making competition take place here on campus. This year organisers are very keen for Warwick graduates to get involved by submitting a team.

What started as a celebration event for Warwick's 40th Anniversary has become a yearly event. Now in its fourth consecutive year, Warwick Shootout, run by the Centre for Student Development and Enterprise is set to pit another 24 teams of students, staff and alumni against each other.

If you would like to take part in the competition, you will need to make a film up to four minutes long in just 24 hours. The film will include people, places and objects on campus and will be based upon a brief which is revealed just one hour before filming.

Further details about the competition and how you can enter can be found on the Warwick Shootout pages. If you have any specific questions, please feel free to email us.

Celebrating German Studies at Warwick

In March the first-ever formal gathering for alumni and friends for German Studies took place here on campus. The afternoon event incorporated a celebration of the Frankfurt Translation Prize, including the unveiling of a new commemorative plaque.

The event was attended by over 100 people (a mix of alumni, current students and current/former staff) and the plaque was unveiled by Jeremy Gaines (PhD German Studies 1980-86) and Paul Keast (BA German Studies 1976-80 and MA German Studies 1980-85) who established the Frankfurt Translation Prize. Previous winners of the prize were on hand to talk about their experiences and to express thanks to Jeremy and Paul.

In addition, the occasion was used to highlight the various developments in the Department of German Studies over recent years, such as the establishment of The Godfrey Carr Fund for Excellence in German which was created to help support the study of German at Warwick.

To find out more about The Godfrey Carr Fund and how you can help support the German Studies at Warwick, please contact Sam Davies (Director of Annual Giving & Legacies).

Library Book Fund

The Library has recently launched the University of Warwick Book Fund. This aims to provide students with the best possible access to the books necessary for their studies. With a gift of £35 to the Book Fund, the Library can add a newly purchased book to its collections in a field chosen by the donor – whether that is the arts, social studies, science or medicine. The book can be plated, with the name of your choice, to commemorate the honouree.

Every year the Library receives many requests from faculty and students that are challenging. The Fund gives the Library the opportunity to expand the breadth of its collections and to acquire materials which it might otherwise have to forego.

Don't forget to Gift Aid your support!

Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling's announcement in his recent Budget that Gift Aid rebates will continue at current levels for the next three years is excellent news for the University.

Gift Aid allows individuals to complete a simple, short declaration which states that they are a UK taxpayer. This means that any donations they make to a charity are treated as being made after deduction of income tax at the basic rate. Consequently, the charity can reclaim the basic rate income tax paid on the gift from Her Majestys Revenue and Customs. This means that currently we can claim 28p for each £1 given under Gift Aid!

Signing a Gift Aid declaration for the University is a simple way of increasing the value of your support without costing you any more. For more information on Gift Aid and giving to Warwick, visit www.warwick.ac.uk/go/giving.
