Rugby and Roller Hockey

Warwick women are featured in this issue with news of two alumni in the very different worlds of rugby and roller hockey.

Former Warwick rugby player qualifies as referee

Lisa Ryder (Mathematics 1993-96), a former rugby player at Warwick, has recently qualified as a rugby referee. She writes 'Since leaving Warwick I have been working as an IT Consultant. Due to the nature of my job I gave up playing rugby as it wasn't very professional to meet customers with rugby injuries, especially black eyes! As a compromise I decided to enrol on an RFU refereeing course last year. I have now completed the RFU's National Foundation Course part 1, which allows refereeing of junior rugby, and part 2 for the senior game. However, since enrolling on the course I have become pregnant so I haven't put the skills learnt into practice yet!'

Roller hockey bronze at World Cup

Emily Goodhand's (English and European Literature 1998-01) love of roller hockey started at Warwick and she is now part of Great Britain's first-ever roller hockey team. She writes: 'After leaving Warwick I spent four months working in PR for Estee Lauder in New York, and played roller hockey recreationally every Sunday afternoon with a group of local lads. After returning to England in February 2002 and temping for a while I started work at Royal Holloway University's music department library.

Having played roller hockey in the GBHI Midlands league whilst at Warwick, I decided to get in touch with the secretary of the GBHI Southern league and ended up playing with the Farnborough Arrows. Through my contacts at the club I learnt of the trials for the GB Women's team in January. I went to the 3 hr trial at Bisley, was invited back to the 2nd round of trials in Derby in February and finally selected as part of a 9 player team for the Western CanAm Cup and World Inline Cup as part of the GB squad!

I have just returned from Canada, where the GB Women's team won Gold in the CanAm Cup and Bronze in the World Cup, which, considering this is the first year that GB has entered a Women's team, is really good going!! It also demonstrates that the women are a competitive force in roller hockey, which is a predominantly male sport - at Warwick I was the only girl in the A team for 2 years in a row. I just hope that the sport continues to gain recognition in this country, as Canada and the US are so much better equipped for it than we are - the leisure centre where the Cups were based housed 4 full size rinks complete with catering facilities and meeting rooms, it was just amazing!'

New Fitness Facilities Opened

Sport at Warwick received a huge boost this month with the opening of a brand new state-of-the-art 400 square metre fitness facility on campus. The air-conditioned suite contains 100 pieces of Precor gym equipment, including a full range of cardiovascular machines, fixed weights and free weights. Cardiotheatre has also been installed so students, staff and alumni can watch TV as they train!

The extension to the Sports Centre also includes an Exercise Studio, which will be used for a range of fitness and dance classes. A new Performance Weights Room, reception and changing rooms in the old building complete the revamp.

If you are a WGA member you are entitled to a big discount on the facilities, making it half the price of a commercial gym for the same, if not better, standard of equipment.
