World Championship Wayne!

This summer Wayne Davey will be playing for the GB Masters Ultimate team in the World Ultimate Championships in Finland. Wayne captained the team to victory in the 2003 European Championships in France – the first success at this level by a GB team – and is confident that the team is good enough to challenge for the World title this year.

Wayne played for, and captained, the Warwick Bears team while a student (Mathematics 1985-88), and has carried on playing ever since. He is head of finance for an engineering company in Bath where he has lived for the last seven years.

Ultimate is an exciting, non-contact team sport played with a flying disc (or 'frisbee') and can be played by both men and women on a field similar to an American Football pitch. The game is played without referees, as players make their own foul calls.

Warwick University was, for years, the home of the sport in the UK with the longest established club (it started in 1976) and has always been one of the larger sports clubs on campus. Several other Warwick graduates will also be taking part in the tournament representing their country carrying on a proud Warwick tradition in the sport.

More about the sport can be found at www.ukultimate.com and the if you want to see whether the team was successful you can check the tournament website on www.wugc2004.org

Daily Telegraph Young Sportswriter of the Year

Rob Parsons (History 2000-03) writes: 'I have held an interest in journalism ever since I was old enough to hold a pen, and when I got the chance to enter a prestigious national writing competition, in this case The Daily Telegraph's Young Sportswriter of the Year award, I found it hard to resist.

My 100-word piece on snooker star Jimmy White got me into the final six from the 500 original entrants, and after writing another longer article on the British Masters golf I was delighted to win the first prize. This included my article being printed in The Telegraph and a cheque for £500, which went some way to paying off my student overdraft.

Since I graduated in June 2003 I have been pursuing my interest in reporting in other ways, and having completed a post-graduate training course in Sheffield I am now a news reporter for the Stoke Sentinel, a large daily newspaper in Staffordshire. My working day is rarely dull, and despite the occasional 'death-knock' and low pay I really enjoy the variety of my job and the opportunities it brings to meet new and interesting people.'
